The Rock Formation is where Lao Lei and Adisa Mostafa ran to after their Lifeboat landed in a nest of Firebears. Once those are taken care of, by the time the quest Finding Martians is finished, everyone will relocate back to Adisa Camp.
The area is rich in minerals. 
Copper and 
Iron are accessible after removing just two or three layers of 
dirt, 
Silver is found just a few layers deeper, and even deeper there is also 
Gold.
Zinc is available on surface level as well, just a few meters to the north (at the mushroom rock, but also deeper in the ground).
More to the north there is a massive deposit of Copper at 10664, 7569.
A bit to the south-southeast of the Rock Formation, and somewhat deeper in the ground, there is a sizeable deposit of 
Aluminum (at 10735, 6950).
The little mound at 10604, 6928 is almost entirely made of Silver, and about the half of the other mound at 10664, 6915.
Ever father to the south-sounthwest, at the shore there are large deposits of 
Petroleum at 10397, 6644 and at 10283, 6715, the latter mixed with large amounts of Copper and Gold.
Following the Copper vein to the north you will find another huge Zinc deposit at 10413, 6946 and 10509, 7163
